Rant: Newer Kids' Shows Don't Teach Enough

Posted by KitsuneGirl Mar. 15, 2008 @ 10:46 AM EDT

I've been thinking of how classic cartoons are compared to new ones and a bad difference I noticed is that most shows for kids these days don't teach much unless they are meant for little kids but not even those tell alot of important things (at least from the ones I've seen) that classic cartoons teach like saying no to drugs, not to smoke, not to talk to strangers, not to imitate dangerous stunts by cartoons, etc. In the 1993 cartoon 'The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog', they always had these shorts at the end called a 'Sonic Says' and in each one, the main charactor Sonic would teach kids important lessons. There was even one about what kids should do to defend themselves if strangers touched them in a spot that made them feel uncomfortable. I think there needs to be more shows teaching that lesson because on the news, I'm forever hearing about kids (generally little girls) being raped and killed. In a bunch of classic cartoons I've seen, there where moments where a charactor did a dangerous stunt and said to the viewers that they are proffesionals and that kids shouldn't try it. I think that it would be a good thing for newer cartoons too, especially for something on bumpers to anime blocks like Toonami since recently, a 10 year old boy ended up killing himself by imitating a stunt from the popular anime 'Naruto'. The most recent show I've seen on Cartoon Network that tought these kind of lessons was 'Ozzy and Drix' which sadly didn't last long. If newer shows don't continue having these important lessons tought then more children will die and more shows for kids will likely get cancled. It would also be good if there where more newer shows for kids that tought about history, science and stuff. I do still love how some shows for kids on Nick and the old Cartoon Network original shows had some adult humor sneaked in to get more adults liking the show having it more for the family to enjoy but alot of adults can be okay with some lessons being tought for kids as long as the story stays fun for a whole family to enjoy. That's all I have to say for this rant! See you next time!
